About the Thing Library

Thing Library is a Library of Things...

Like a normal library you can sign up and become a member and borrow items and things you need.

Thing Library is a community based library of things open to all.

At Thing Library we believe that we should all have access to things we need or want to use, even if we cannot afford to buy them or we don't have the space to store them.

Contact us and become part of our community!

Because every hand counts: Come visit us and see for yourself the sort of work we do. We look forward to seeing you!

Why Borrow from a Library of Things?

  • Help Save the Environment

You can make a massive difference to your carbon footprint borrowing instead of buying. On average In one year, a Library of Things is able to save users almost 200 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, over 250 tonnes of raw material use and more than 20 tonnes of manufacturing waste!.By borrowing, you can help to avoid unnecessary production of things, as well as waste ending up in landfill!

As an organisation, we aim to do as much as we can to reduce our environmental impact. More about this can be found in our Environmental Policy.

  • Save Money

The original cost of many of our items can be as much as £300, such as our power tools and and expensive household appliances such as pressure washers and carpet cleaners. By borrowing for affordable prices for short periods of time, you could save yourself hundreds of pounds, even if you only it borrow once or twice a year.

We offer some amazing membership packages that  will blow your mind and not your wallet!

We also offer a Low Income** membership, which saves you a massive 50% off all things borrowed, as well as a Student*** membership which saves you 20% off all borrows!

** Low income members must provide proof of benefits on first visit in order to verify - (Jobseekers Allowance, PIP, Universal Credit, Income Support) from within the last 3 months.

*** Student members must provide student ID (active NUS Card) on first visit in order to verify membership.

  • Save Space

Do you get frustrated by the fact that the juicer or ice cream maker you use once in a blue moon, takes up so much space in your kitchen cupboard? Or when you're struggling to fit your lawnmower back in the shed every year? Borrowing these kinds of things instead of buying is a great way to save space in your home!

  • Connect to your Community

Many of our items are kindly donated by people from the local community and we have a wonderful team of volunteers who help out in the shop and repair our items. Being a member of Thing Library, whether you are a regular borrower, a volunteer or supporter of our ethos, helps to grow and strengthen the community of Tring, Berkhamsted and the surrounding villages!
